Another smart (Tim O'Reilly called it "a milestone in the history of the internet.":-)) step in their off site strategy which is relevant to our WeMedia mashup session. They announced Yahoo! pipes which looks super cool and I'll check out when I get back home.
Coincidentally, Derek Chezzi, Senior News Editor for Yahoo! Canada is here at We Media and participated in our Mix n Mash workshop yesterday. Maybe we should regroup today...

Welcome to the blog version of the media mashup workshop today at WeMedia.
We looked at several example of great local info and community of interest mashups which mix and manipulate and compose feeds, widgets, editorial and more. It is incredible how many barriers have been removed from remixing content from around the web. They're meant for personal use- simple ways to mix your own content to tell a story, provide an information service or share with friends.
Then we created our own in 30 minutes...
FOR THIS WEMEDIA Mashup blog, we used:
1. Flickr tag (wemedia) and YouTube tag (miami) widgets from Widget Box
2. Put RSS feed of We Media onto a map which anyone can add to using Platial MapKit
3. Feedshake for Integrated wemedia related feeds in one place
4. Typepad for quick free blog to put all this stuff.
DURING OUR SESSION WE ALSO CREATED a Pet Rescue Blog using the same easy tools...(Keep in mind its a quick hack :) )

Shel Israel, Naked Conversations author. Global Neighborhoods is a new book addressing global communities of interest. Media companies will be distribution points for people taking their own news online. The religious aspect of reading chopped trees will go away then. "We will deliver them" well, no... "We will decide whats valuable and we will assemble it in the ways we want to aggregate, collaborate etc."
Ian Rowe, MTV (Met him long ago with Scott Heiferman from Meetup when he was working on an experience marketplace project called imar.com). Since then, he has been a personal democracy advocate. Our business model is based on a small group of editors deciding what to put on, it is not (yet?) based on users. People may choose to get their news from people who support their ideas/values. Need new business model to balance top down and bottom up. Not just media companies- all of us- total customization can be a danger to our citizenry.
MTV overall business is changing now. Control of content and distribution (when, how, what). Get rewarded for doing good with media in the hands of young people. Small acts that add up to something much greater. 2012 - we may not have long format programming and different relationhisp with users and more input from young people in creative process.
Rich Skrenta, Topix/Open Directory Project. Denmark forums; Over 200,000 comments on the cartoon controversy. Geo IP lookup feature. People across the world looking at this. Is it appropriate for an editor in Palo Alto to say what someone in Tehran can say to someone in Amsterdam?
Jan Schaffer, J-Lab; "Citizen media sites are not necessrily acts of journalism but acts of civic participation, acts of community." "Naked caring and passion." A little outside of traditional journalism who don't enter the passion space with comfort. 70% declare sites to be a success although they're not making money. Watchdogging local government, causing community conversation, increasing voter turnout. Not finished stories. Fusion of news and choose, observational, informed by how much they care about community. It is growing rapidly. Hyper local architectire of participation. You consume media because it will help you get your various jobs done. And those who create the most efficient and value-add will likely be most successful.
Lisa Stone, Blogher.org, Women represent 51% of population. Women are the power users of this Web 2.0 world. 8100+ blogs in their directory. Thousands of mommy bloggers discussing American presidency in ways that are new. Acting on what they're hearing and discussing. Telling real news about a world people want to change.
What is the future of this thing called local especially to newspapers?

Up to 1/2 to connect because there is no network. Only dial-up access. Providing online space would increase government openness and participation but no forum for that because government is crushing this infrastruture. "Links between open government, open technology and open markets and we shouldn't forget that." (1200% inflation rate of money in Zimbabwe).
"We speak and they converse" No you don't organize, it is self organizing and it has been for some time.
How can mainstream media sources remain relevant? How can they reach into the level of niche and neighborhood? How can they reach and spread and also make money?
Global empowerment with right tools. Global Voices bloggers have been jailed and silenced. Provide tools to people in juristiction where its dangerous to blog. Anonymizers, proxy information.
